Junior Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) of the volleyball team was named the University of Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending October 9, marking the first time in her career that she has earned the Athlete of the Week honor.
This past weekend, Monastra had a big weekend on the attack for the Royals at the Leopard Invitational at the University of La Verne, as Scranton went 3-1 in four matches to push their record on the year to 23-2 overall.
After posting 3 kills, seven digs and three blocks in a 3-1 win over Whittier on Friday, Monastra led the attack in Scranton's 3-0 win over UC Santa Cruz, finishing with nine kills and three digs.
On Saturday, Monastra went into double-figures in kills in both matches on the day, finishing with 14 against Austin, and 15 against La Verne in a 3-2 Scranton win. In the La Verne match, Monastra posted a double-double, finishing with 17 digs (to match a season-high), along with three service aces.
For her efforts on the weekend, Monastra was named to the Leopard Invitational All-Tournament team, as well.
For the year, Monastra is averaging 2.69 kills per set (172 total kills) and 2.27 digs per set (145 total digs). She's also posted 15 service aces and 18 total blocks on the season.
Monastra and the rest of the University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Dickinson for a non-conference match. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
