ONEONTA, N.Y. – The University of Scranton volleyball team snapped a six-match losing skid on Wednesday night with a four-set victory at Oneonta in non-conference action. After the two teams split the first two sets, the Royals pulled away in the final two games to level their record at 9-9 on the season.
Scranton gained the early advantage in the match with a hard-fought, 25-23 victory in the opening set before the Red Dragons (6-10) leveled the contest with a 25-21 win in game two. The Royals rebounded in the third set, trouncing the hosts, 25-8, before closing out the match by taking game four, 25-20.
Senior Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) posted a match-high 16 kills and added 11 digs to lead the Royals while fellow senior Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) put down 14 kills in the win.
Defensively, sophomore Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) recorded a team-high 15 digs.
The Royals 47-41 advantage in digs for the match and a 12-7 edge in aces. The visitors also posted a .186 team hitting percentage while Oneonta hit just .052 as a squad in the loss.
Scranton will be back in action on Friday with a pair of matches at the Arcadia Knights Invitational. The Royals will meet host Arcadia at 5 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. match against Immaculata.
