Freshman Abigail Corrigan (Carbondale, Pa./Holy Cross) sped her way to the first individual title in four years by a University of Scranton women's cross country runner when she won the Ron Stonitsch Invitational on Saturday at Vassar College. As a result, she has been named the University's Athlete of the Week.
Corrigan beat the other 97 runners in the race by completing the 5,000-meter course in 19:04.4, easily outdistancing the second-place finisher by almost 14 seconds. Corrigan's individual win is the first for a University of Scranton women's cross country runner since Cara Notarianni won the Penn State-Wilkes-Barre Invitational on Oct. 9, 2013.
In two events in her freshman season, Corrigan has a first-place and a second-place finish.
Corrigan and the women's cross country team will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they compete in the Cougar Classic at 10:30 a.m. at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa.
