DALLAS, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball team found its offensive rhythm in the sixth and seventh innings on Monday, but it wasn't enough as the Royals fell to Misericordia, 15-8, at Tambur Field.
Scranton's eight runs marked just the second time in the past 14 games they scored eight or more. But the big innings later in the game weren't enough after the Cougars took a 14-2 lead after five innings.
The Royals (9-21) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after half an inning thanks to an RBI single by sophomore center fielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) and a run that scored on a double play.
But Misericordia (25-12-1) scored three in the bottom half of the first, then broke the game open with five in the third and three each in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Royals rallied in the sixth when sophomore right fielder Mike McDonald (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) delivered an RBI single and senior left fielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) ripped a two-out, three-run double.
An inning later, Healy ripped a long two-run home run to bring the Royals within 14-8, but Misericordia added a run in the bottom of the seventh and held Scranton in check over the final two innings.
Healy finished with two hits, two runs and three RBIs, junior left fielder Michael Umerich (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) singled twice and scored a run, and senior catcher Eddie Ravert (Havertown, Pa./Malvern Prep) and freshman second baseman Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) each singled and scored a run.
Scranton is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Wilkes at 4 p.m. at Connell Park.
