Box score vs. Swarthmore
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Scranton baseball team matched its season high with 16 hits en route to a 20-2 victory over Alfred State in the team's second game of the day on Saturday at the Ripken Experience. The Royals dropped the opening game of the day, 9-2, to Swarthmore.
Scranton (3-6) put up crooked numbers in six of the first seven innings against Alfred State, scoring three in the first, third and sixth innings, five in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the seventh.
Sophomore right fielder Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) led the offensive onslaught with a double, two singles, five RBIs, a run and a stolen base. Junior catcher Dan Hansen (Helena, Mont./Helena) finished with three singles, two runs and an RBI, sophomore designated hitter Ryan Coonahan (Oreland, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) doubled, tripled, drove in two and scored twice, and sophomore center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) singled twice, scored a run and drove in a run.
Sophomore left-hander Brian Markowski (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) was the beneficiary of the run-scoring barrage, picking up the win by working five solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Junior lefty David Chromey (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) was credited with a save after working the final four innings without giving up a run, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out 10.
In Saturday's first game, Scranton fell behind 3-0 after two innings and Swarthmore put the game away with four runs in the fifth. Senior right fielder Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) delivered both Scranton runs with a two-run double in the eighth inning.
The Royals will complete their trip on Sunday morning when they take on Alfred State at 9 a.m.
