MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Scranton baseball team overcame an early deficit by scoring eight times in the first five innings to post a 10-5 win over Alfred State in the final game of the team's trip to the Ripken Experience.
Scranton (4-6) scored trailed 3-0 after an inning, but scored four times in the second, once in the third and three times in the fifth to take control. Sophomore shortstop Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) led the way with three hits, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
The Royals, who went 3-3 on the trip, also received three hits, a stolen base and an RBI from junior second baseman Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior), as well as a single, double, a run, an RBI and a stolen base from sophomore right fielder Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep).
Junior lefty Michael Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Brighton Academy) struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings to pick up his first victory.
Scranton will be back in action on Saturday, March 19, when the Royals open Landmark Conference play by hosting Elizabethtown in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
