BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's track & field team was back in action on Saturday at the John Covert Classic at Lehigh University, the team's first competition since Dec. 2.
Competing against a mix of student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II and III, the Royals had four top-25 individual finishes in the non-team scoring event.
Junior Mark Merli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) led the team with a 15th-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 10.75 inches. Freshman Dylan Weybrecht (Bear Creek Twp., Pa./Holy Redeemer) added a 19th-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 9.61 seconds.
The Royals also received a 23rd place from senior Kyle Robbins (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 1.75 inches. And freshman Matt Kinback (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) was 25th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.40.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Kinback, junior Matt Barrett (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights), senior Nicholas Peragine (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) and junior Stephen Grunbok (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) came in sixth with a time of 8:34.40.
The men's track & field team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 3, when the Royals compete at the Susquehanna University Challenge beginning at 10 a.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa.
