BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Competing against a mix of NCAA Division I, II and III student-athletes, sophomore Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) of The University of Scranton women's track & field team outjumped the competition to win the high jump at the John Covert Classic at Lehigh University on Saturday.
Banas was the lone competitor to clear 1.65 meters, which she accomplished in her first attempt. It was enough to edge East Stroudsburg's Aspen Gaita, who cleared 1.60 meters to finish second. Banas has now won the high jump in both of Scranton's events in the squad's first season of indoor track & field.
The Royals also received four other top-25 finishes in the non-team scoring event. Freshman Abigail Corrigan (Carbondale, Pa./Holy Cross) led that group by finishing 13th in the mile with a time of 5:31.94. Fellow freshman Abigail Guziewicz (Peckville, Pa./Holy Cross) was 19th in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 11:50.13.
Sophomore Sophie Evans (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) finished 23rd in the 60 meters with a time of 8.45 seconds. And sophomore Nora Boussatta (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) was 24th in the 800 meters in a time of 2:36.36.
The women's track & field team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Susquehanna University Challenge in Selinsgrove, Pa. Competition begins at 10 a.m.
