EDITOR'S NOTE: Updates to note that Banas broke the Landmark Conference record in the high jump.
ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) continued her impressive season for The University of Scranton women's track & field team on Saturday, setting a Landmark Conference record while winning the high jump at the Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell University.
Banas cleared 1.71 meters (5 feet, 7.25 inches) for her best jump of the season and the third-best in all of NCAA Division III. She broke the previous Landmark Conference record of 1.68 meters, set by Moravian's Melissa Cheong on Jan. 30, 2016. Banas easily won the event, besting second-place Aviana Goode of Syracuse, who cleared 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches).
Banas has now won the long jump in three of the four events the Royals have competed in during the indoor season.
Other notable performances by the Royals on Saturday include:
- Sophomore Jasmin Russo (Hamden, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy) finished 13th out of 26 runners in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.04 seconds.
- Sophomore Nora Boussatta (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) finished 15th among 27 runners in the 800 meters with a time of 2:32.05.
- Freshman Abigail Corrigan (Carbondale, Pa./Holy Cross) was 16th among 30 runners in the mile, finishing in 5:30.84.
- Sophomore Chrissy Noonan (North Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) finished 17th among 26 athletes in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 10.48 seconds.
- Sophomore Hannah Tracy (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) finished 17th in the shot put with a throw of 9.14 meters (30 feet, 0 inches).
- Sophomore Michaela Farrell (Kirkwood, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) finished 18th in the 400 meters in a time of 1:06.10.
The Royals will now spend a week preparing for the Landmark Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.
