BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) of The University of Scranton women's track & field team finished seventh in the high jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships on Saturday at Birmingham Southern College.
Banas cleared 1.68 meters (5 feet, 6 inches) for her best jump of the day, but could not match her season best of 1.71 (5 feet, 7.25 inches) meters in the next round. By finishing seventh, Banas earns All-American status, becoming the first athlete in Scranton history to earn NCAA Division III All-American honors in indoor or outdoor track & field.
The day started well for Banas, who cleared the first three heights – 1.55, 1.60 and 1.65 meters – on her first try. At 1.68 meters, she missed twice before clearing the ball on her final attempt. She could not replicate that effort at 1.71 meters, which would have matched her career-best, which she set in the Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell University on Feb. 17.
Cirrus Robinson of Ohio Wesleyan won the high jump gold by clearing 1.74 meters in her first attempt. It was her second straight indoor national championship in the high jump.
