WILKES-BARRE TWP., Pa. – Sophomore Maxwell Greene (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) won the 5,000-meter run to pace The University of Scranton men's track & field team at the Monarch Open at King's College on Saturday.
Greene won the race with a time of 16:08.91 for his first victory of his career. His effort led six Royals who posted top-five finishes in the meet.
Three Royals posted second-place finishes on Saturday. Freshman David Gerace (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) was second in the shot put with a throw of 12.57 meters (41 feet, 3 inches), the best throw of the season for the team. Junior Mark Merli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) was second in the long jump with a leap of 6.15 meters (20 feet, 2.25 inches). And junior Matt Barrett (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) finished second in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in 4:17.29.
Sophomore Zachary Gutekunst (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:30.27. And freshman Brian Sawyer (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.1 meters (16 feet, 8.75 inches).
The Royals will return to action on Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6, in the Landmark Conference Championships at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pa. Saturday's action starts at 9:15 a.m. with Sunday's action set to start at 9 a.m.
