Sophomore Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) picked up where she left off in the indoor season, winning the high jump to lead The University of Scranton women's track & field team at the Muhlenberg Invitational on Saturday.
The event was the first of the spring season for the Royals, who were snowed out two weeks ago at Elizabethtown. Saturday's meet was held in spring-like sunshine, but temperatures remained in the 40s.
Banas, who earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in March, had little trouble winning the high jump on Saturday. She cleared 1.67 meters (5 feet, 5.75 inches), four inches better than the second-place finisher.
Banas also competed in the long jump, finishing sixth with a leap of 4.62 meters (15 feet, 2 inches). Her efforts in the high jump and long jump were two of seven individual top-10 finishes for the Royals. The others were:
- Freshman Emily Way (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.63.
- Sophomore Sophie Evans (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.67.
- Freshman Gabriella Fitzpatrick (South Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) was eighth in the javelin with a throw of 25.52 meters (83 feet, 9 inches).
- Sophomore Nora Boussatta (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) was ninth in the 800-meter run with at time of 2:30.85.
- Junior Hannah Tracy (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) was ninth in the shot put with a toss of 9.98 meters (32 feet, 9 inches).
- Junior Emily Carr (Elmhurst, Pa./Scranton Prep) came in 10th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:45.55.
Scranton's 4x400-meter relay team of Way, Boussatta, freshman Emily de Onis (Blue Town, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and sophomore Michaela Farrell (Kirkwood, N.Y./Seton Central Catholic) also posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:27.51.
The Royals will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14, in the Coach P Invitational at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.
