LA CROSSE, Wisc. – Sophomore Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) of The University of Scranton women's track & field team finished 17th in the nation in the high jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Field Sports Complex at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Banas cruised through the first three rounds, clearing 1.52, 1.57 and 1.62 meters all on her first try. But when the bar went to 1.65 meters for the fourth round, Banas clipped the bar on all three attempts and was knocked out of the competition.
"It wasn't the storybook ending like during the indoor season, but I'm so proud of Caroline for coming back this year and competing at the highest level not once, but twice," head track & field coach Ozzie Brown said. "I'm excited for her because this has only ignited the fire and made her even more hungry for next year."
The finish capped a standout season for Banas in the first year of women's track & field at the University. She was the Landmark Conference champion in the high jump during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, and set conference records during both seasons. During the indoor season, she earned All-American honors by finishing seventh at the NCAA championships.
Cirrus Robinson of Ohio Wesleyan won the high jump national title on Friday, the only competitor to clear 1.74 meters.
