ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Sophomore Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) of The University of Scranton women's track & field team continued her impressive year by winning gold in the high jump at the Landmark Conference Championships on Sunday at Elizabethtown College.
Banas won the event by clearing 1.62 meters (5 feet, 3.75 inches), which matched the championship record, held by three different athletes. Banas also won gold at the indoor championships in February and went on to earn All-American status by finishing seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She is currently ranked 10th in the nation in the high jump during the outdoor season and is expected to qualify for the NCAA outdoor championships once the rest of the results from around the country this country are reported.
The gold was the second podium finish of the weekend for Banas, who was sixth in the long jump on Saturday. As a result of her performance on the weekend, Banas was named the Rookie of the Year.
Scranton had four other individuals finish on the podium Sunday:
- Freshman Emily Way (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.30. It was the team's best time in the event this spring by 2.02 seconds.
- Sophomore Jasmin Russo (Hamden, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy) finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.84.
- Junior Chrissy Noonan (North Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.88 seconds. It was her best and the team's best time of the season by .29 seconds.
- Sophomore Nora Boussatta (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) finished seventh in the 800-meter run, finishing in a time of 2:23.79. It was the team's best time of the season in the 800 by 3.66 seconds.
Scranton also placed two relay teams on the podium. The 4x100-meter relay team of junior Alexa Cardella (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By The Sea), Noonan, freshman Bria DeBernardi (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown Community) and Russo finished sixth with a time of 53.31 seconds.
And the 4x400-meter relay squad of Way, Boussatta, freshman Emily de Onis (Blue Town, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and sophomore Margaret Stein (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) was sixth with a time of 4:27.42.
Scranton finished seventh as a team with 39 points. Moravian won the team title in dominant fasion with 278 points.
