WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's track & field team had three competitors win events on Saturday as the Royals opened the outdoor portion of its schedule on a cold and windy day at West Chester University's Golden Ram Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman Shane McKeon (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) finished first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, posting a winning time of 10:10.04 to finish more than a minute ahead of his closest competitor.
Junior Zachary Gutekunst (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) won the 5,000 meter run, pacing the field with a time of 16:04.00 while freshman Sean Connolly (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate) and sophomore Jack Patwell (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) finished ninth and tenth in the race, respectively.
Senior Mark Merli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) won the long jump with a leap of 6.10 meters.
Sophomore Matt Kinback (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) placed second in the 800 meter run, clocking in at 1:56.80 while freshman Nicholas Socci (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) finished 10th in the event.
Freshman Phil Cocco (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) brought home a fifth place result in the shot put, posting a mark of 12.39 meters.
In the 110 meter hurdles, freshman Brian Madden (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland) finished sixth after crossing the stripe in 18.64.
Freshman Conor Nealon (Duryea, Pa./Holy Cross) was sixth in the javelin with a throw of 32.51 meters, finishing one place ahead of junior Patrick Donoghue (West Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep).
Sophomore Zachary Mead (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) brought home an eighth place result in the 1,500 meter run, clocking in at 4:19.85.
In the 100 meter dash, Merli and junior Keyser Leepier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) both finished in 11.92 seconds, tying for ninth place overall.
The Royals took fifth place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:39.39.
Scranton will compete in Susquehanna's Jim Thorpe Invitational next Saturday starting at 10 a.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa.
