WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior Andrew Charway (Irvington, N.J./Christ the King Prep) and freshman Shane McKeon (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) won events on Saturday to lead The University of Scranton men's track & field team at the Monarch Open hosted by King's.
Charway took first in the 200 meter dash, clocking in at 23.19 seconds, while McKeon was the winner of the 5000 meter run, leading the field with a personal record pace of 16:03.23 in the final competition for the Royals before next weekend's Landmark Conference Championships.
Charway also brought home on of six runner-up finishes on the day for Scranton as he placed second in the 100 meter dash, crossing the stripe in 11.70 seconds.
Freshmen Brian Madden (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland) and Phil Cocco (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) both finished the day with second place results on personal-best performances. Madden was the runner-up in the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.27 while Cocco's toss of 13.12 meters in the shot put placed him second in the competition.
Senior Mark Merli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) clocked a season-best mark of 6.27 meters in the long jump to finish second in the event while sophomore Matt Kinback (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) took second in the 800 meter run by clocking in at 1:59.54.
Junior Zachary Gutekunst (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) finished just behind McKeon in the 5000 meter run, placing second with a time of 16:03.88.
Scranton will head to Towson, Maryland next Saturday and Sunday for the Landmark Conference Championships hosted by Goucher. The two-day meet is scheduled to commence at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
