Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's basketball team (11-2, 3-0 Landmark) rallied in the second half to top Susquehanna (8-5, 0-3 Landmark) by a score of 51-44 in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday night at Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.
The Lady Royals outscored the River Hawks by a 37-27 margin in the second half to notch their fifth straight victory.
Scranton also improves to 51-1 all-time against Susquehanna.
The visitors held a one point edge after the first quarter, but the River Hawks would respond with a 12-5 spurt to take a 17-11 lead at the 3:24 mark of the second quarter. Junior Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) sank a pair of free throws in the final minute of the half to slice the lead to 17-14 at the break.
Trailing 23-18 in the early stages of the third quarter, the Lady Royals used an 8-0 run that included four points apiece from senior Emily Shurina (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and junior Sara Walsh (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) to take a 26-23 lead with 1:53 remaining in the quarter. Susquehanna scored five of the next seven points to tie things at 28 apiece with 9:40 to play before a Shurina jumper ignited a 9-0 run over the next three plus minutes for a 37-28 advantage. However, the River Hawks would not go quietly and battled back to cut the lead to 48-44 in the final minute, but Scranton iced the game with made free throws from Shurina and graduate student Abby Anderson (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) in the waning seconds for the 51-44 win.
Anderson led the Lady Royals with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, while Shurina added 15 points to go along with a career-high 14 rebounds. Angelini chipped in with career-highs in both points (14) and rebounds (eight) in the victory.
Her 14 points on the night surpassed the previous career-best of 13 that had been set versus Catholic on Feb. 21, 2021.
Amalia Esposito paced Susquehanna with 13 points off the bench in the setback.
Scranton shot 29.0% (18-of-62) from the floor in the contest and Susquehanna was 18-of-58 (31.0%), while head coach Nick DiPillo's squad grabbed 20 offensive rebounds on the night and held a 50-36 edge on the glass led by Shurina's career-best 14 boards.
The Lady Royals head to Goucher on Saturday with opening tip against the Gophers set for 4 p.m. As a reminder, there are no spectators allowed at Saturday's game.
