Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's basketball team (16-2, 7-0 Landmark) led wire to wire and captured a 10th straight win with a 69-62 victory over the Drew Rangers (12-3, 3-3 Landmark) in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday night at the John Long Center in Scranton.
Scranton also remains unbeaten all-time against Drew with an 83-0 record.
The Lady Royals were hot out of the gate on Wednesday and a three-pointer from junior Bridget Monaghan (Florham Park, N.J./Morristown-Beard) opened up a 13-5 lead with 4:20 to play in the first quarter. Drew sliced the lead to five in the final minute before fellow junior Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) buried a jumper for a 19-12 Scranton lead after one. In the second quarter, the Lady Royals led 25-17, when graduate student Abby Anderson (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) hit a layup to ignite a 9-0 run capped by a layup from junior Kyra Quigley (Drexel Hill, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr) that extended the lead to 34-17 at the 3:52 mark. Quigley hit another layup in the final minutes of the quarter as the hosts took a 36-22 lead into the locker room.
A three-point play by Angelini extended the Lady Royals' lead to 15 at 49-34 with 3:02 to play in the third quarter, but the Rangers responded with a 9-2 run and a jumper from Erin Frederick in the waning seconds cut the lead to eight at 51-43 at the end of three. Scranton quickly scored nine of the first 12 points of the fourth quarter and Angelini pushed the lead back into double digits with a basket at the 6:35 mark for a 60-46 advantage. Frederick tallied five straight points to bring Drew back within nine at 67-58 with 3:17 remaining, but they were unable to get any closer than seven, which happened in the final minute of the contest.
Anderson led all scorers with 25 points including a perfect 10-of-10 clip at the charity stripe, while Monaghan sank six threes for 20 points of her own. Elsewhere for the Lady Royals, Angelini added 12 points, five assists and three steals in the victory.
This marks the fifth time this season that Monaghan has buried five or more threes in a game and the junior leads all of Division III in three-point shooting at 51.9% (41-of-79).
Frederick led Drew with 22 points in the setback and was joined in double figures by Joey Meyers who had 20.
Scranton shot 42.1% (24-of-57) from the floor and 33.3% (8-of-24) from deep, while connecting on all 13 attempts from the free throw line. Drew was 21-of-53 (39.6%) from the field and 4-of-14 (28.6) from three-point range to go along with a 76.2% clip (16-of-21) at the charity stripe.
The Rangers also held a 36-31 edge in the rebounding battle and Anderson led Scranton with eight caroms on the night.
The Lady Royals look to extend the winning streak to 11 on Saturday afternoon when they hit the road to take on Landmark Conference foe Juniata. Tip off in Huntingdon is slated for 4 p.m.
