Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Scranton baseball team (7-4) scored double-digit runs for the third time in as many games and notched a fourth straight win with an 18-9 victory over Mount Aloysius (3-5) on Tuesday afternoon at Pelicans Ballpark in Myrtle Beach.
Pelicans Ballpark is the home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans who are the High-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
Scranton scored double-digit runs for the sixth time this season and the 18 runs are the most since a 19-18 victory over Wm. Paterson on Apr. 25, 2022.
The Royals trailed 4-1 after an inning, but battled back to take the lead with six runs in the top of the third as senior Braden Breithaupt (Canadensis, Pa./Stroudsburg) came through with an RBI single, fellow senior Nick Reposa (Factoryville, Pa./Tunkhannock) came through with a two-run double two batters later and junior Matthew Querey (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) added an RBI single of his own to take an 8-5 lead after three innings.
Reposa added a run in the fourth with a sac fly and the Royals led 9-7 in the home half of the fourth when senior right-hander Kevin Donovan (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) worked his way out of a one out, bases loaded jam with consecutive groundouts to end the inning.
Donovan tossed a scoreless frame of relief to earn his first win of the season after coming in to pitch for freshman righty Ryan Boyd (Millwood, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) who allowed four earned runs on five hits and fanned three in three plus innings of work.
Tanner Abrams was dealt the loss for the Mounties after allowing eight runs (five earned) on six hits to go along with three walks and a strikeout in three innings of work.
A pair of hit by pitches and a single started things off for Scranton in the fifth and junior Corey Zientek (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) drove home a pair with an RBI single. An error and an RBI fielder's choice from Breithaupt allowed two additional runs to score in the inning, which resulted in a 13-7 Scranton lead.
The Royals went on to plate solo runs in the sixth and seventh and three in the eighth as sophomore Jake Elston (New Milford, Conn./Canterbury School) came through with an RBI single and junior Jack Heineman (Abington, Pa./LaSalle College) delivered an RBI double.
Heineman matched his career-high with four hits in the victory, while Elston (2-5, RBI), Reposa (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI, SB, 2 R), Querey (2-3, 2 RBI, SB, 3 R) and freshman Conor Campbell (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) who tallied two hits, three stolen bases and three runs scored all recorded multi-hit games.
Along with Donovan, sophomore righty Dominic Chieffalo (Norristown, Pa./Malvern Prep), graduate student lefty Ryan Heiser (New Milford, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional), senior righty Phil Schoch (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and senior righty Johnny Flannigan (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Dominic) all fired scoreless outings in relief.
Heiser entered with a 14-9 lead in the sixth and the bases full of Mounties with one away, but the southpaw quickly notched consecutive strikeouts to escape the jam.
The Royals will open Landmark Conference play with a doubleheader on Saturday at Susquehanna. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
