Lady Royals Drop Tough 67-64 Contest at ETown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown's Summer McNulty hit a go-ahead three with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter and The No. 3/5 University of Scranton women's basketball team (11-1, 4-1 Landmark) dropped a tough 67-64 decision to the Blue Jays (8-4, 4-1 Landmark) on Wednesday evening at Thompson Gymnasium in Elizabethtown.

McNulty's decisive three made it a 64-62 game at the time and the Lady Royals later trailed 67-64 in the final seconds after McNulty split a pair at the line, but were unable to find a game-tying three on the game's final possession.

Scranton got off to a hot start on Wednesday as sophomore Kaci Kranson's (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) three made it 8-6 with 5:31 to go in the first quarter and ignited an 11-0 run capped off by a pair of free throws from sophomore Kaeli Romanowski (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) to make it 16-6. The Lady Royals then held an 18-11 advantage after one. In the second quarter, freshman Meghan Lamanna (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) hit a jumper for a 24-17 lead before ETown battled back with an 11-3 run to take a slight 28-27 edge at the 3:14 mark. Romanowski answered with a three for the visitors who eventually took a 35-34 lead into the locker room.

Much of the third quarter proved to be a back-and-forth affair and senior Maddy Ryan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) hit a layup that tied the game at 46 apiece with 2:14 to go in the quarter. The Blue Jays then scored five straight points before freshman Katie Gorski (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) hit a three to bring the Lady Royals within two at 51-49 at the end of three. The fourth period was much of the same as the two sides traded punches and Ryan's jumper at the 3:33 mark gave Scranton a 62-61 lead for the time being. However, the Lady Royals were unable to extend the lead past one and McNulty's afore-mentioned three just under two minutes later proved to be the difference in the game.

Kranson led the Lady Royals with 19 points, while Romanowski added 15 points and four steals and Ryan contributed 10 points and eight boards.

McNulty had 25 to pace the Blue Jays and Cyleigh Wilson tallied 15 points.

Scranton shot 37.3% (25-of-67) from the field and 40.0% (6-of-15) from three on the night and ETown was 24-of-56 (42.9%) from the floor and 5-of-14 (35.7%) from long range.

Ryan led the Lady Royals with her eight rebounds and Kranson added seven.

The Lady Royals will host Susquehanna at the John Long Center on Saturday afternoon with action slated to get underway at 4 p.m.
