WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior Maddy Ryan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points and The No. 9/13 University of Scranton women's basketball team (18-2, 11-2 Landmark) registered a fifth straight victory with an 86-58 win over the Wilkes Colonels (8-12, 4-8 Landmark) on Wednesday evening at the Marts Center in Wilkes-Barre.
Wednesday also marked the seventh time this season that the Lady Royals have scored 80 points or more.
Wilkes led 15-13 just over five minutes into the game when graduate student Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) buried a three to spark a 14-2 run over the remainder of the quarter. Sophomore Kaci Kranson (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) sank two free throws in the final minute of the quarter to cap the run and make it a 27-17 game after one. In the second quarter, Scranton held a 33-23 lead when a Kranson layup ignited a 13-1 run and freshman Meghan Lamanna's (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) jumper extended the advantage to 46-24 for the time being. Wilkes was able to hit two threes in the final seconds of the half, but the Lady Royals still took a 46-30 lead into the locker room.
Scranton kept the lead in double digits throughout the third quarter and scored the final four points of the period including a layup from freshman Katie Gorski (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) at the buzzer that opened up a 63-46 advantage. Sophomore Kaeli Romanowski's (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) jumper at the 7:47 mark of the fourth quarter kickstarted a 12-2 run over the next three plus minutes and Ryan's layup made it a 79-51 game as the Lady Royals preserved a fifth straight win.
Ryan led four Scranton players in double figures with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Kranson had 14 points, Gorski matched her season-high with 12 and Lamanna contributed 11 of her own. Elsewhere for head coach Ben O'Brien's team, Romanowski tallied nine points, four assists and three steals and senior Maddie Hartnett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) added eight points.
Wilkes was led by Brenna Babcock with 13 points.
The Lady Royals shot 47.2% (34-of-72) from the floor and 31.6% (6-of-19) from deep on the night. Wilkes was 21-of-39 (53.8%) from the field and 6-of-12 (50.0%) from long range.
Scranton held a commanding 40-23 edge on the glass behind a season-high seven boards from Gorski and six from Ryan.
Kranson tallied four steals in the contest as O'Brien's team forced 23 Wilkes turnovers and Romanowski along with senior Allie Lynch (Villanova, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) recorded three steals apiece.
The Lady Royals will return home to host rival No. 8 Catholic in a Landmark Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at the John Long Center at 3:30 p.m.
