Baseball Drops Road Contest at Drew

MADISON, N.J. – Drew took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and broke the game open in the late innings as The University of Scranton baseball team (12-4, 6-2 Landmark) dropped a 9-2 decision to the Rangers (9-7, 2-3 Landmark) on Wednesday afternoon at Doc Young Field in Madison.

The game was tied at two apiece in the bottom of the fifth when Raiden Yost gave Drew the lead for good with an RBI single and Aiden Mitchell followed with a sac fly to make it a 4-2 game for the time being.

Trailing 4-2, Scranton loaded the bases with two away in the seventh following consecutive singles and an error, but a popout to shortstop ended the threat.

Senior right-hander Thomas Plunkett (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) was dealt the loss for the Royals as he allowed three runs on four hits to go along with three walks and two strikeouts in four plus innings.

Yost got the win for the Rangers after giving up two runs on three hits while walking two and fanning in 5.0 IP.

Drew got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third, but Scranton fought back with two in the top of fourth as senior John Zarnowski (East Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph's) plated a run with an RBI double and later came around to score on junior Jake Elston's (New Milford, Conn./Canterbury School) RBI single.

Mitchell tied the game at two apiece for the hosts with a solo shot in the fourth.

Following the afore-mentioned two runs in the fifth, Drew was able to extend the lead in the seventh with a five-run inning.

Elston (2-4, RBI) recorded a multi-hit game for Scranton and sophomore righty Ryan Boyd (Millwood, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) struck out one over 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The Royals will host rival Catholic in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Volpe Field with first pitch of game one slated for 11 a.m.
