SCRANTON, Pa. – Freshman righty Matt Holgado (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) allowed just one run over six plus innings and The University of Scranton baseball team (26-9, 15-7 Landmark) completed the series sweep of Moravian with a 10-2 victory over the Greyhounds (15-23, 8-16 Landmark) on Sunday afternoon at Volpe Field in Scranton.
Holgado gave up a run on five hits while walking one and fanning five over a season-best 6.0+ IP to notch his second victory of the season. Senior righties Johnny Flannigan (Huntington, N.Y./St. Dominic) and George Sengos (Washington Twp., N.J./Westwood Regional) each tossed scoreless innings in relief to help preserve the win.
Sunday's victory marked the 100th career win for the Royals' senior class, who is the winningest class in program history.
A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out in the third before consecutive sac flies from seniors Nick Reposa (Factoryville, Pa./Tunkhannock) and Jack Heineman (Abington, Pa./LaSalle College) made it a 2-0 game.
Heineman extended the lead with a two-run double in the fifth inning and a perfectly executed squeeze play from sophomore Conor Campbell (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) later in the frame opened up a 5-0 lead.
David Ciaccio was dealt the loss for Moravian after allowing five runs on five hits while walking three and fanning two in five innings of work.
Scranton broke the game open with a five-run sixth as sophomore Aidan Casey (Silver Beach, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) knocked in a pair with a two-run single and a wild pitch, sac fly and error allowed three additional runs to score in the inning.
Moravian pushed across solo runs in the seventh and ninth, but was unable to get any closer as the Royals secured their 26th win of the season which is tied for the second-most in a single season in program history.
Casey (2-3, 2 RBI, SB, 2 R), Heineman (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, SB, R) and junior TJ Pleban (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) who had two hits and two runs scored all recorded multi-hit games for the Royals. Freshman Jake Lopez (Oakland, N.J./Ramapo) added a hit, walk and scored three times.
