Baseball Sees Historic Season End with Setback Against Immaculata in NCAA Regionals

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
– The University of Scranton baseball team (30-13) saw its historic season come to an end with an 8-0 setback against the Immaculata Mighty Macs (27-17) in an NCAA Regional elimination game on Saturday at Captains Park.

Immaculata advances to an elimination game scheduled for later today against the loser of Christopher Newport/NC Wesleyan.

In the home half of the first inning, Immaculata got a pair of one-out hits and pushed across the game's first run on an RBI groundout. The Mighty Macs then tacked on an additional run in the second inning and three in the third including a two-run single from Joey Wright that made it a 5-0 game.

Graduate student righty Hunter Ralston (Duryea, Pa./Pittston Area) was dealt the loss for the Royals as he allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits to go along with two walks and a strikeout in 3 1/3 IP.

Stephen DiBattiste got the win for Immaculata as he scattered five hits while walking one and fanning 11 in a complete game shutout.

Later in the game, the Mighty Macs plated one run apiece in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

Five different players tallied one hit apiece in the contest for the Royals.

Senior lefty Jason Carpenter (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) allowed two runs on two hits while fanning a pair in 3 1/3 IP of relief, fellow senior lefty Mike Fox (Westfield, N.J./Union Catholic) got the final out of the seventh and senior righty Thomas Plunkett (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) surrendered an unearned run and struck out one in an inning of work.

Scranton's 2024 campaign saw the program capture a second Landmark Conference title in four seasons and a single-season program record 30 victories, which surpassed the previous record of 28 that had been set in 2022.

The roster featured 17 seniors and two graduate students in Carpenter, Brendan Douthit (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic), Fox, Johnny Flannigan (Huntington, N.Y./St. Dominic), Chris Gutt (Narbeth, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), Jack Heineman (Abington, Pa./LaSalle College), Daniel Johnson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata), Joe Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), Anthony Marotta (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), Matthew Moreira (Union, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), Aidan Plick (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), Plunkett, Matthew Querey (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum), Ralston, Nick Reposa (Factoryville, Pa./Tunkhannock), Matt Roda (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), George Sengos (Washington Twp., N.J./Westwood Regional), Ryan Walsh (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) and John Zarnowski (East Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph's).
