Preview: Women's Basketball Set to Host Drew in Landmark Semifinals

The No. 1 seed University of Scranton women's basketball team will host the No. 5 seed Drew University Rangers in the Landmark Conference semifinals at the John Long Center on Thursday night at 7:00 PM in Scranton, PA.

Scranton

  • Record: 24-1 (17-1, Landmark)
  • Last Landmark Championship: 2023-24
  • Scranton, ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division III Rankings, is looking for its tenth consecutive Landmark Conference Title dating back to the 2015-16 season. 
  • Scranton is the best in the nation in points against per game (45.4), eighth in the country in offensive points per game (79.7) and second behind the reigning national champion NYU in scoring margin (34.4).
  • Head coach Ben O'Brien is in his third season at the helm of the Royals and has a career record of 80-5 at Scranton. During O'Brien's tenure, the Royals have won two Landmark Championships, and made an Elite Eight appearance in 2023-24.

Royals to Watch

  • Junior Kaci Kranson, a D3Hoops.com All-American last season, ranks second in the Landmark Conference with 17.4 points per game. Kranson has tallied 126 rebounds, 43 steals and 26 assists on the year.
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Bennett has played in all 25 games while making one start during her second year at Scranton. Bennett is shooting 40.2% from three-point range and is averaging 12.1 points per game to go along with 20 blocks and 95 rebounds off the bench this year for Scranton.
  • Junior Kaeli Romanowski has started in all 25 games this season and is second in the conference with 81 steals. Romanowski has tallied 83 assists and averages 6.5 points per game.

Drew

  • Record: 15-11 (9-9, Landmark)
  • Last Landmark Championship: N/A
  • Drew is the No. 5 seed coming into the 2024-25 Landmark Conference Playoffs after losing in the first round of the playoffs against Susquehanna University last season.
  • Drew is ranked seventh in the conference in points per game (62.3), fifth in points allowed per game (63.7) and sixth in scoring margin (-1.3).
  • Head coach John Olenowski is in his ninth season at Drew and is the winningest coach in team history. He has coached the team to the Landmark Conference playoffs in three of the last four years.

Rangers to Watch

  • Junior Gianna Pica has started in 25 of Drew's 26 games and is fifth in the Landmark Conference in points per game (15.2). She has tallied team-highs with 147 rebounds and 42 steals, while adding 12 blocks on the season.
  • Sophomore Amy Rachilla leads the team and is second in the conference with 99 assists, and she is tied for the team lead with Pica with 42 steals while adding 64 rebounds. Rachilla also leads the Rangers with a 44.3% three-point shooting percentage.
  • Junior Brenna Hezel is tied atop the conference in blocks per game with 1.5 as she has tallied 40 blocks over 26 games played. She has also recorded 116 rebounds, 43 assists and 21 steals.

Inside the Series

  • Drew has not beaten Scranton in 91 contests since Jan. 25, 1977.
  • Scranton defeated Drew twice this season. The Royals won the most recent meeting on Jan. 29, 2025, 78-39. Earlier in the year, Scranton defeated Drew, 74-49.
