Preview: Women's Basketball Set to Host Landmark Championship Against Catholic on Saturday

The No. 1 seed University of Scranton women's basketball team will host the No. 3 seed Catholic University Cardinals in the Landmark Conference Championship at the John Long Center on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM in Scranton, Pa.

No. 4 Scranton 

  • Record: 25-1 (17-1, LC)
  • Last Landmark Championship: 2023-24
  • Scranton, ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division III Rankings, is looking to defeat Catholic in the title game for the second straight year and win its tenth consecutive Landmark Conference Title dating back to the 2015-16 season.  
  • Scranton is the best in the nation in points against per game (45.0), eighth in the country in offensive points per game (79.3) and second behind the reigning champion NYU in scoring margin (34.3). 
  • Head coach Ben O'Brien is in his third season at the helm of the Royals and has a career record of 81-5 at Scranton. During O'Brien's tenure, the Royals have won two Landmark Championships, and he coached the team to an Elite Eight appearance in 2023-24. 

Royals to Watch 

  • Junior Kaci Kranson, a D3Hoops.com All-American last season, ranks second in the Landmark Conference with 17.3 points per game. Kranson scored 14 points in the semifinals win against Drew. 
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Bennett has a 40% three-point shooting percentage and scores 12.1 points per game to go along with 21 blocks and 97 rebounds off the bench this year for Scranton. Bennett scored 12 points against Drew in the semifinals. 
  • Junior Kaeli Romanowski has started in all 26 games this season and is second in the conference with 82 steals. Romanowski has tallied 86 assists and averages 6.5 points per game. 

No. 15 Catholic 

  • Record: 24-3 (15-3, LC) 
  • Last Landmark Championship: 2014-15
  • Catholic is the. No. 3 seed in the Landmark Conference tournament and is coming off wins against Goucher in the quarterfinals and No. 16 Elizabethtown in the semifinals, earning its spot in the title game for the first time since 2021-22. 
  • Catholic is second in the Landmark behind Scranton in points against per game (54.6) and scoring margin (22.8) and is fourth in the conference in points per game (77.4). 
  • Matt Donohue is in his 17th season as the head coach of the Cardinals and is the women's basketball program leader in wins. Donohue has led the Cardinals to three Landmark Conference Championships and six NCAA tournament appearances. 

Cardinals to Watch 

  • Junior Anna Scoblick has started in all 27 games for the Cardinals and leads the team with 14.5 points per game, 85 assists, and 29 blocks, and she is second with 53 steals on the year. Scoblick scored 16 points in the team's win over Elizabethtown in the Landmark Semifinals.
  • Graduate Student Kerry Flaherty leads the Cardinals with a 43% three-point shooting percentage. Flaherty averages 11.5 points per game and has tallied 27 steals and 31 assists. She scored a team-high 22 points in the Semifinals win against Elizabethtown.
  • Senior Carly Mulvaney paces Catholic with 203 total rebounds and 53 steals and averages 10 points per game with 24 blocks this year. Mulvaney scored 13 points in the win against Elizabethtown on Thursday. 

Inside the Series 

  • Scranton has won 12 Landmark Championships, while Catholic has won three. 
  • These two teams have faced each other eight times in Landmark Championship games, and Scranton has won six of those eight games, including last season, 57-48. 
  • Scranton defeated Catholic twice this season. The Royals won the most recent meeting on Feb. 8, 2025, 62-53. Earlier in the year, Scranton defeated Catholic, 77-55.
