Royal Reflection: Quinton Laughlin, Wrestling

Interview Conducted by Athletic Communications Intern Mallory Woodland

Royal Reflection highlights the senior student-athletes who represent what it means to be a Royal. In this edition, we feature Quinton Laughlin of The University of Scranton Wrestling team as he reflects on the moments that defined his time as a Royal.

Describe your Scranton experience in three words

  • Three words I'd use to describe my experience in Scranton are challenging, rewarding, and transformative.

What does being a Royal athlete mean to you?

  • Being a royal athlete is very important to me, I am grateful to be able to represent the school and my team in and out of season.

Do you have a go-to pre game or pre-competition ritual?

  • Yes, before any wrestling starts in a match or tournament, I will listen to Shoots and Ladders by Korn and time it for when it switches from bag pipes to guitar with the first match starting. It is always the first song I listen to when warming up for competition.

What's the biggest lesson you've learned as a Royal athlete?

  • The biggest lesson I've learned as a royal athlete is time management. Handling both my dedication to sport and academic discipline has always been a challenge for me over the past years. This year I have reflected and can see the different habits that I've learned from others and myself that have made me much more successful at managing time and sports.

Favorite memory?

  • My favorite memory is staying on campus for winter intercession with the team. We always had too much free time on our hands that led us to come up with ways to keep us busy, along with practicing of course.

What's something you've learned from a teammate that has stuck with you?

  • Not to dwell on your losses and failures. You have the right to be upset for a time, but don't be stuck in the past, utilize your setbacks as motivation and those important mistakes as lessons.

Any advice for incoming student-athletes?

  • Keep yourself in check, if you feel yourself falling behind either in academics or athletically reach out to someone you have a whole team of friends, teammates, coaches, a tutoring center for everything, and OSSS that could help you keep up.

What are you most proud of from your time at Scranton?

  • I am most proud of the friends and family I have made throughout my journey here at Scranton, some of my closest friends are the ones I've made here and I am beyond grateful for them.

What's one message you'd like to leave for your teammates?

  • Thank you for such a great experience. All my teammates have made an impact on my life and my personal growth. I've learned so many lessons, and I couldn't imagine who I'd be without them in my life.
