Royal Reflection: Matthew Pagan, Men's Track & Field

Interview Conducted by Athletic Communications Intern Mallory Woodland

Royal Reflection highlights the senior student-athletes who represent what it means to be a Royal. In this edition, we feature Matthew of The University of Scranton Men's Track and Field team as he reflects on the moments that defined his time as a Royal.

Describe your Scranton experience in three words
  • Fulfilling, Turbulent, and Memorable.
What does being a Royal athlete mean to you?
  • To me, being a Royal means maintaining a positive attitude, supporting one another, and staying together through all the ups and downs of a season.
Do you have a go-to pre game or pre-competition ritual?
  • Listening to an album I've never listened to on the bus rides to our meets.
What's the biggest lesson you've learned as a Royal athlete?
  • To take everything one step at a time and enjoy the process more than the result.
Favorite memory?
  • DeSales Outdoor Meet my junior year where I got a PR in every event. It was also one of the only outdoor meets where it didn't rain.
What's something you've learned from a teammate that has stuck with you?
  • One poor performance does not make you a poor teammate.
Any advice for incoming student-athletes?
  • Your attitude matters just as much as the skills you bring. Be yourself.
What are you most proud of from your time at Scranton?
  • I am proud of the person that I've grown into since my freshman year and all the lessons both my sport and academics have taught me.
What's one message you'd like to leave for your teammates?
  • Stay present in the moment and be proud of everything you did to get where you are.
