SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton volleyball team was one point away from pulling out a key Landmark Conference victory against Moravian College Sunday afternoon.
Instead, the Royals settled for a frustrating loss after the Lady Greyhounds survived match point in the fourth set and dominated the fifth and deciding set to emerge with a 3-2 victory (25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-6).
The loss drops Scranton to 17-12 overall and into fifth place in the Landmark Conference with a 2-4 mark. The Royals will now open quarterfinal play in the upcoming Landmark tournament on Wednesday, October 31, against Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, at 7:00 p.m.
With the win, Moravian College improves to 20-5 overall and locks up third place with a 4-2 conference record. The Lady Greyhounds will host Goucher College in the other quarterfinal match, also on October 31 at 7:00 p.m.
Senior Jenell McFadden (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) led the Royals with 18 kills and 22 digs—both season highs—and sophomore outside hitter Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) had 11 kills and 24 digs. Lauren Hostetler and Samantha Savite combined for 22 kills and Jesse Krasley finished with a match-high 27 digs for Moravian.
Crilly and McFadden’s ‘double-doubles’ were their 16th and ninth of the season, respectively, for Scranton, which will return to action next Saturday, October 20, against Misericordia and Arcadia in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
McFadden’s 18 kills today give her 1,081 for her career and move her into sixth place on the Royals’ all-time list.
