ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The University of Scranton field hockey
team rallied midway through the second half to force overtime in
the season opener at Muhlenberg College, but the home team scored
early in overtime to hand the Royals a 2-1 defeat on Friday
evening.
Scranton (0-1) received its lone goal from senior forward
Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) on an assist from sophomore forward Alyssa Fania (Annandale, N.J/North Hunterdon)
at the 51:19 mark.
The Mules (1-0) won the game 57 seconds into overtime on an
unassisted goal by sophomore forward Kayleigh Thies (North
Caldwell, N.J./West Essex). They also received a goal early in the
second half from sophomore forward Lauren Jordan (Drexel Hill,
Pa./Upper Darby).
Muhlenberg outshot Scranton, 17-8. Mules senior goalie Kristen
Dornenburg (Haverford, Pa./Haverford) made five saves to pick up
the win.
Sophomore goalie Krista
Mundy (West Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made six saves
after halftime for the Royals, who are back in action Saturday when
they host Marywood University at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
