Video Highlights
The University of Scranton field hockey team used a stout
defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack to claim its first
victory of the season, a 4-0 win over Marywood University on
Saturday afternoon at sun-drenched Fitzpatrick Field.
Scranton (1-1) dominated possession, outshooting Marywood, 44-9.
The Royals allowed just two shots on goal in each half and limited
the Pacers (0-1) to just a handful of scoring opportunities.
Scranton received a goal and an assist each from junior
midfielder Laura
Megargel (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and sophomore
midfielder Alyssa
Fania (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon). The Royals
also received goals from senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) and junior midfielder Jessica Conroy (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy
Academy).
The Royals struck first when Conroy scored on a shot from the
left point at the 18:55 mark. Less than three minutes later, Fania
scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Megargel.
Scranton carried that 2-0 advantage into halftime before
Megargel converted a penalty stroke for a 3-0 advantage with just
under 25 minutes to play. Kempf finished the scoring with her
second goal of the season off a feed from Fania as Scranton
rebounded from a 2-1 overtime loss at Muhlenberg in the season
opener on Friday evening.
With Scranton dominating offensively, Marywood received a strong
goalkeeping effort as sophomore Natalie Winters (Hopewell Township,
N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) made 21 saves.
The victory improves Scranton to 30-6-1 all-time against
Marywood.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to
Dallas to face Misericordia University in a non-conference game at
4 p.m.
