TOWSON, Md. – Senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored a pair of goals to lead The University of Scranton women's field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Goucher College in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field.

Scranton (3-3, 1-0 Landmark) also received goals from sophomore forward Cassie Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and freshman midfielder Meghan Kearney (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) in the victory.

Mullen's goal gave the Royals the lead 15:05 into the game when she snuck a shot along the ground past the Goucher goalkeeper for an early lead. Kempf doubled the lead just over eight minutes later when she took a long pass from junior forward Caitlin Liberatore (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) and scored.

The Royals held that lead until nine minutes into the second half when Kempf scored again, this time batting a loose ball out of the air and into the goal. Kearney closed out the scoring in the 56th minute when she scored after a scramble in front of the goal on a Scranton penalty corner.

Kempf's two goals give her a team-leading five on the season and 31 for her career, the fifth-highest total in school history. She also has 73 career points (31 goals, 11 assists), also fifth-best in school history.

Mullen's goal was her first of the season while Kearney's was the first of her career. Liberatore's assist was her first of the season.

Sophomore goalie Krista Mundy (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made two saves for her first shutout of the season.

Scranton held a 34-4 advantage in shots and a 13-3 edge in penalty kicks. The Royals are now 6-0 all-time againast Goucher.

For the Gophers (2-4, 0-1 Landmark), freshman goalkeeper Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville) had 15 saves.

Scranton is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 25, when it hosts Immaculata at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
