SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton field hockey team
scored early and often Tuesday evening against Immaculata
University in the first of a three-game home stand at Fitzpatrick
Field.
Freshman Alyssa Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon
Valley) and senior Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) scored two goals apiece and each had an assist as
the Royals rolled to an 8-1 victory, their second straight to
improve to 4-3. The loss dropped the Mighty Macs to 0-7.
Scranton, which jumped out to a 4-0 lead by intermission, also
received a goal apiece from junior Caitlin Liberatore (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph
Academy), senior Corinne O’Kane (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal
O’Hara), and freshmen Jessica
Pankey (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) and
Bryn Frankhouser (Plymouth Meeting,
Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh).
Immaculata avoided the shutout in the 63rd minute when sophomore
Ashley O’Donnell (Collingdale, Pa./Academy Park) blasted in a
shot from just inside the scoring arc on a ball served up on a
penalty corner by sophomore midfielder Tiffany Lockfeld (Glen
Mills, Pa./West Chester Bayard Rustin). Freshman goalie Patsy
Murphy (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) made 11 saves for the
Mighty Macs, who were out-shot 35-8.
Scranton’s eight goals were its most since scoring nine
against Neumann University on August 31, 2008, at Fitzpatrick
Field.
Kempf’s goals were her team-leading sixth and seventh of the
season and give her 33 for her career, which is fourth on the
Royals’ all-time list.
Scranton will host Wells College and Keystone College at
Fitzpatrick Field this Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and
30. Both games will begin at 12:00 noon.
