Freshman forward Alyssa
Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) scored a pair
of goals and senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) had a goal and an assist as The University of
Scranton field hockey team posted its fourth straight victory, a
5-0 defeat of Keystone College on Sunday afternoon at Fitzpatrick
Field.
The Royals (6-3) also received goals from senior defender
Corinne O'Kane (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) and sophomore midfielder Alyssa
Fania (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) in the
victory.
Scranton struck quickly as Whitman scored an unassisted goal in
the eighth minute when she gathered her own previous shot attempt
and knocked the ball past the Keystone goalie for an early 1-0
lead. Fania doubled the lead with her fourth goal of the season
when she blasted a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty
corner assist by Kempf at the 23:05 mark.
O'Kane scored her third goal of the season just six
seconds before halftime when she outfought two defenders to tip a
shot past the goalie for a 3-0 lead at the break. Whitman added her
second goal of the game and fifth of the season on an assist from
junior midfielder Jessica Conroy (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy
Academy) just 95 seconds into the second half.
Kempf capped the scoring in the 64th minute when she tapped in a
rebound off a saved shot for her team-leading ninth goal of the
season. Kempf now has 35 career goals, fifth-best in school
history. She also has 84 career points, which moves her into
fourth-place all-time in Scranton history.
The Royals held a 30-5 advantage in shots and 13-5 in corner
kicks. During their four-game winning streak, Scranton has
outscored its opponents by a total of 23-1.
The victory improved Scranton to 8-6-2 all-time against Keystone
(4-6).
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 3, when it hosts
Moravian College in a Landmark Conference match at 7 p.m. at
Fitzpatrick Field.
