DALLAS, Pa. – Junior midfielder Laura
Megargel (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) scored two
goals and had an assist as The University of Scranton field hockey
team defeated Misericordia University, 4-2, at McGeehan Field on
Wednesday afternoon.
Megargel's first goal gave the Royals (2-1) an early 1-0
lead just over 20 minutes in. Slightly more than nine minutes
later, she scored on a penalty stroke to push Scranton's lead
to 3-1.
Scranton also received goals from senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) and senior defender Corinne O'Kane (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) in the win.
Kempf's third goal of the season, on an assist by
Megargel, restored Scranton's lead at 2-1 after Misericordia
had tied it at one moments after Megargel's first goal. It
also moved Kempf into fifth all-time in Scranton history with 69
career points (29 goals, 11 assists). Her 29 goals are tied for
sixth-most all-time.
O'Kane provided some breathing room with her first goal of
the season when she scored with just under 12 minutes to play to
give Scranton a 4-1 lead. Misericordia scored late in the game to
provide the final margin.
Sophomore goalie Maria Begliomini (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest
Area) made five saves, all in the second half, to earn the
win in goal.
The Royals are now 28-3 all-time against Misericordia. The
Cougars (2-1) received goals from sophomore midfielder Terra Hall
(Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and freshman forward Allison Alexander
(Newark, Del./Newark) in the loss.
Scranton is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 8, when it hosts
Keystone College at 3:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
