With both teams off the strong starts halfway through their
seasons, The University of Scranton men's and women's soccer teams
have made their way into the regional rankings by the National
Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA).
The men's soccer team, which is 6-1-3 and 1-1 in Landmark
Conference play, is ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Region after
defeating Goucher, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday, Oct. 5. The
Royals won it when senior midfielder Colin McFadden
(Ventnor City, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) converted a
penalty kick with 32 seconds left in the second overtime. Senior
midfielder Bill McGuiness
(Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) added a second-half
goal in the victory.
The men, who moved up two spots from seventh last week, are in
action today at 4 p.m. when they visit Elmira College.
The women's team, which has won nine straight, made its debut in
the Mid-Atlantic Region rankings at No. 10 this week. The Royals
(9-2, 2-0 Landmark) are coming off a 5-0 win over Goucher College
on Saturday, Oct. 5. Senior forward Samantha Russo
(Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) had a hat trick and
freshman midfielder Kelly Egan (Essex Falls, N.J./West
Essex Senior) had a goal and two assists in the win.
The women's team puts its winning streak on the line Wednesday
when it hosts Western Connecticut State at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick
Field.
