WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP – The University of Scranton
baseball team couldn't come up with the timely hit it needed
on Sunday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader at King's
College, 5-1 and 3-2, at Lipo Field.
The Royals, now 3-4, got two hits in the opener from sophomore
first baseman Ross
Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy,
N.J.), sophomore second baseman Matt
Maghini (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) also singled and
scored, and senior outfielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford,
N.J./Cranford) had an RBI.
King's (6-1) got a run in the first and four more in the
second to take control. Junior second baseman Anthony Re
(Bloomfield, N.J./Queen of Peace) had the big knock, a two-run
single in the second inning.
Senior lefty Corey
Gorman (Laflin, Pa./Coughlin) struck out seven in five
innings while taking the loss.
In the second game, Scranton got two hits and an RBI from
freshman outfielder Ray Grapsy
(Covington Township, Pa./North Pocono) and two hits and a
run from senior shortstop Tim
LeCompte (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic). Sophomore
third baseman Michael Umerich (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington
Heights) also had an RBI single.
After King's scored a run in the first inning, the Royals
knotted things on Umerich's RBI single in the fifth. But the
Monarchs answered on a two-out, two-run homer by senior infielder
Chris Sweeney (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood). The Royals got a run
back in the sixth on Grapsy's infield single, but could get
no closer.
Scranton is back in action when it opens Landmark Conference
play on Saturday, March 16, with a doubleheader at Juniata
beginning at 1 p.m.
