KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The University of Scranton baseball
team fell behind early and never found an offensive spark while
losing its Landmark Conference series opener at Merchant Marine
Academy, 13-2, on Friday afternoon at Roosevelt Field.
The Mariners (4-6, 2-2 Landmark) jumped ahead 3-0 in the first
inning on a three-run home run by junior shortstop Danny Collins
(Sleepy Hollow, N.Y./Briarcliff).
Scranton (5-5, 2-1 Landmark) got a run back in the top of the
second on an RBI single by junior third baseman Mike Trabulsi (Malverne, N.Y./Chaminade), but
Merchant Marine answered with two more in the bottom half of the
inning and two in the fourth to take control.
Collins finished with a single, double, homer, four RBIs and
three runs for the Mariners. Freshman righty Kyle Clausen
(Southold, N.Y./Southold) allowed one run on eight hits and two
walks while striking out three in seven innings for the
win.
For the Royals, sophomore first baseman Ross
Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy,
N.J.) singled and doubled, and Trabulsi had two singles
and an RBI. Sophomore outfielder Justin Muratore (Hartsdale, N.Y./Iona Prep)
added an RBI single.
The game was called after seven and a half innings due to
darkness.
The two schools will complete the series when they play a
doubleheader on Saturday at Roosevelt Field at 11 a.m.
