KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore right-hander Matt
Calamoneri (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) threw a
complete game seven-hitter to lead The University of Scranton
baseball team to a 6-1 victory in the second game of a
doubleheader, giving the Royals a split against Merchant Marine
Academy on Saturday afternoon at Roosevelt Field.
Calamoneri allowed just the one earned run while striking out
seven. He didn't allow a walk while helping Scranton (6-6,
3-2 Landmark) bounce back from a 4-3 defeat in the opening
game.
Junior outfielder Michael Gaeta
(Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had three hits, scored twice and
drove in a run in the second game. His RBI single sparked a two-run
first inning as the Royals jumped ahead early.
Freshman outfielder Ray Grapsy (Covington
Township, Pa./North Pocono) had two hits and an RBI, and
senior catcher Michael Amaturo
(Rye, N.Y./Rye), who doubled, sophomore second baseman
Justin Klingman
(Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) and freshman
outfielder Zach Dignam
(Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) each had a hit and an RBI
in the win.
The Royals also got doubles from senior shortstop Tim LeCompte
(Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) and junior designated
hitter Eric Pizzico (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford)
In the opener, Merchant Marine (5-7, 3-3 Landmark) scored twice
in the bottom of the sixth for the win.
Scranton got three hits, including a solo home run, and two runs
scored from sophomore first baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks
Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.). Pizzico
added an RBI in the loss.
Senior lefty Corey Gorman
(Laflin, Pa./Coughlin) struck out five while walking one
and allowing three earned runs in the opener.
Scranton will now travel to Florida, where it will play seven
games next week, beginning with a single game against Southern
Maine on Monday, March 25, at 2 p.m.
