SALISBURY, Md.—The University of Scranton softball team dropped a pair of games today at the Sea Gull Classic.

The Royals lost their season opener to Washington & Jefferson College, 10-1 in five innings, and didn’t have as much luck in their next game, either, losing 9-2 to Randolph-Macon.

SophomoreStephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) had two of Scranton’s five hits in the opener and sophomore Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) drove in the Royals’ lone run with a two-out single in the bottom of the second inning.  Scranton’s other hits were by senior captains Jamie Shackles (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) and Kristen Williams (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury).

Junior Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) had two hits, including an RBI double and a three-run home run, and junior Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) doubled to lead the Presidents.

Scranton took a 1-0 lead in the second game against Randolph-Macon on an RBI single by Williams in the first inning, but the Yellowjackets, now 7-2, scored four times in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good.  Williams and freshmen Alison Kucharski (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) and Marie Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) paced the Royals’ 9-hit attack with two hits apiece.  One of Gentile’s hits was a double.

Randolph-Macon, which took advantage of five Scranton errors to score six unearned runs, was led by freshmen Jenna Best (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry), sophomore Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greenville), and senior Michalann Camp (Courtland, Va./South Hampton Academy) with two hits apiece.  Best, Woody, and Sopko also combined to drive in seven runs.

The Royals will take on Gettysburg College at 10:00 a.m. and Shenandoah at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow.
