SALISBURY, Md.—The University of Scranton softball team
dropped a pair of games today at the Sea Gull Classic.
The Royals lost their season opener to Washington & Jefferson
College, 10-1 in five innings, and didn’t have as much luck
in their next game, either, losing 9-2 to Randolph-Macon.
SophomoreStephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford)
had two of Scranton’s five hits in the opener and sophomore
Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley
View) drove in the Royals’ lone run with a two-out
single in the bottom of the second inning. Scranton’s
other hits were by senior captains Jamie Shackles (Philadelphia, Pa./Little
Flower) and Kristen Williams (Monroe, NY/Monroe
Woodbury).
Junior Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) had two hits,
including an RBI double and a three-run home run, and junior Kelsey
Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) doubled to lead the
Presidents.
Scranton took a 1-0 lead in the second game against Randolph-Macon
on an RBI single by Williams in the first inning, but the
Yellowjackets, now 7-2, scored four times in the bottom half of the
frame to take the lead for good. Williams and freshmen
Alison Kucharski (Hampton, NJ/North
Hunterdon) and Marie Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North
Pocono) paced the Royals’ 9-hit attack with two hits
apiece. One of Gentile’s hits was a double.
Randolph-Macon, which took advantage of five Scranton errors to
score six unearned runs, was led by freshmen Jenna Best
(Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and Katie Woody (Ashland,
Va./Patrick Henry), sophomore Amanda Sopko (Skippers,
Va./Greenville), and senior Michalann Camp (Courtland, Va./South
Hampton Academy) with two hits apiece. Best, Woody, and Sopko
also combined to drive in seven runs.
The Royals will take on Gettysburg College at 10:00 a.m. and
Shenandoah at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow.
