LaPLUME, Pa.—Sophomore Gabrielle Santarelli (Jessup, Pa./Valley View)
belted a two-run triple and junior Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter
Panas) and freshman Alison Kucharski (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon)
had two hits apiece to lead The University of Scranton softball
team to an 8-3 victory over Keystone College in the first game of a
non-conference doubleheader Thursday.
In the nightcap, Giant sophomore pitcher Sara Schraden (Allentown,
Pa./William Allen) limited the Royals to just three hits in five
innings and sophomore reliever Karissa Worobey (Scranton,
Pa./Scranton) threw a scoreless frame as Keystone won, 3-1, in a
game shortened to six innings because of darkness.
Royal freshman pitcher Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock,
Pa./Tunkhannock) improved to 5-3 on the season by
striking out four and scattering seven hits in picking up the
complete game victory in the opener. Scranton broke open a
close game by scoring four times in the top of the seventh, as
senior Kristen Williams (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury)
and Hampsey delivered RBI singles.
Freshman Katie Marro (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) led Keystone
with three hits, including a double, and Schraden and sophomore
Jackie Murray (Galeton, Pa./Galeton Area) each drove in a run.
Santarelli, Williams, and sophomore Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford)
had the lone hits for the Royals in the second game. Scranton
did manage to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as sophomore
Jacquelyn Rossi (Eynon, Pa./Valley
View) drew a bases-loaded walk, but Schraden induced a
pop-out and struck out another batter to end a potentially big
scoring inning.
The Giants, now 11-14, scored all three of their runs in the fourth
inning, as senior Abby Cohen (Bethlehem Pa./Freedom) hit a solo
home run, junior Lisa Ostrander doubled and came around to score on
a ground out by junior Stephanie Puckett (Taylor,
Pa./Riverside), and freshman Katie Weist (Paupack,
Pa./Wallenpaupack) followed with an RBI triple.
The Royals, now 8-7, will take on five-time defending Landmark
Conference champion Moravian College this Saturday, April 13, in
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
