BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team
dropped a pair of games against Moravian College, 8-0 and 12-4, in
Landmark Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Blue & Grey
Field.
In the opener, the Royals (8-9, 3-3 Landmark) managed just one
hit while falling in five innings. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, N.J./West
Milford) had the lone hit, a single in the top of the
first inning.
Moravian (26-6, 4-2 Landmark) scored a run in the second and six
in the third to break the game open.
In the second game, the Royals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first when Romano scored on an RBI single by senior first baseman
Jamie Shackles (Philadelphia, Pa./Little
Flower). The Greyhounds tied it up with a run in the
bottom half before Scranton took a 2-1 lead in the top of the
second when Romano singled in sophomore center fielder Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley
View), who had doubled.
But Moravian bounced right back with three runs in the bottom of
the second and two more in the third to take a 6-2 lead. Scranton
cut the deficit to 6-4 in the fourth when Santarelli singled with
one out and junior designated player Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas) hit a two-run homer two batters later.
The game stayed that way til the bottom of the fifth when the
Greyhounds scored five times to break the game open. They scored a
run in the bottom of the sixth to end it due to the eight-run
rule.
Santarelli, Romano, McHenry and senior infielder Kristen Williams (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe
Woodbury) had two hits apiece in the second game for the
Royals.
Scranton is back in action on Thursday, April 18, when it hosts
PSU-Hazleton in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. at the Jessup Youth Sports
Complex.
