BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior left-hander Corey
Gorman (Laflin, Pa./Coughlin) struck out a season-high
12 batters in eight innings of work, but his effort wasn't
enough to lift The University of Scranton baseball team in a 2-1
defeat to Moravian College on Sunday at Gillespie Field.
Gorman allowed 12 hits, all singles, and walked one in the
complete game effort. His 12 strikeouts were one better than his
previous season high of 11, which he accomplished in six innings
against Houghton on March 28 in Winter Haven, Fla. The Royals won
that game, 3-2, in 12 innings. Gorman also registered the 200th
strikeout of his career, and now has 207 strikeouts in 172 2/3
career innings.
Moravian (17-13, 8-7 Landmark) got both of its runs in the first
inning by hitting just one ball out of the infield. A leadoff
single, an infield single and a wild pitch put runners on second
and third with one out when freshman first baseman Charles Savite
(Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris Central) drove in the first run
with a fielder's choice when the runner beat the throw to
third. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Luke (Stewartsville,
N.J./Phillipsburg) followed with an RBI bunt single before Gorman
got the final two outs to stop the rally.
Scranton (18-12, 7-5 Landmark) got a run back in the fourth when
junior center fielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) walked
with two outs and moved to second on a wild pitch. Senior shortstop
Tim LeCompte (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman
Catholic) then bounced a single up the middle and Gaeta
beat the throw to the plate to cut the deficit in half.
But the Royals could get no closer despite having two runners on
in both the fifth and seventh innings. Senior catcher Michael Amaturo (Rye, N.Y./Rye) finished
2-for-2, raising his season average to .460.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to
LaPlume, Pa. to take on Keystone College at 3:30
p.m.
