LaPLUME, Pa. – Looking to knock off a nationally ranked
team for the second time in eight days, The University of Scranton
baseball team fell in an early hole and couldn't recover,
losing to 15th-ranked Keystone College, 11-4, on Wednesday
afternoon at Christy Mathewson Field.
The Royals (18-13) beat then-ninth-ranked Ramapo College, 8-2,
on Tuesday, April 9 and allowed just eight runs in a three-game
series at Moravian over the weekend. But Keystone (24-7) knocked
around Scranton's pitching for seven runs in the first three
innings and didn't look back.
The Giants finished with 15 hits and took advantage of three
Royals miscues to score a pair of unearned runs.
Scranton scored four times in the top of the eighth to cut their
deficit to 10-4, but Keystone added a run in the bottom of the
inning and then shut down the Royals in the ninth.
Sophomore second baseman Justin Klingman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington
Heights) got the Royals on the board in the eighth with an
RBI double. Sophomore first baseman Ross
Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy,
N.J.) followed with a two-run double and junior outfielder
Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford)
added an RBI single in the inning.
Gaeta and Danzig each had two hits for the Royals, while seniors
Anthony Duchnowski (Dunmore, Pa./Holy
Cross) and Greg
Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and
junior Eddie
Ravert (Havertown, Pa./Malvern Prep) each had
singles.
Scranton returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 20, when it
hosts Drew University in a Landmark Conference doubleheader
beginning at 1 p.m. at Connell Park.
