JESSUP, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team
packed some offensive punch despite the chilly weather, thumping
Drew University, 10-8 and 10-2, in a Landmark Conference
doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Jessup Youth Sports
Complex.
The Royals, who were playing for the first time since March 9,
improved to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in Landmark Conference play. Drew
fell to 10-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Scranton rallied from a 7-4 deficit in the fifth inning of the
first game. The Royals erased that deficit on one swing of the bat
by senior first baseman Jamie Shackles (Philadelphia, Pa./Little
Flower), who blasted a three-run homer to tie the game in
the bottom of the fifth.
The Royals then scored three more times in the sixth on an RBI
single by sophomore shortstop Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, N.J./West
Milford), a Drew error and an RBI sacrifice fly by senior
third baseman Kristen Williams (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe
Woodbury).
Scranton also received a three-run homer in the first inning
from junior right fielder Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas), who finished 3-for-3 with four runs and three
RBIs. Shackles also had three hits, three RBIs and scored a run,
and freshman left fielder Maria Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North
Pocono) added two hits and a run.
Freshman pitcher Alison Kucharski (Hampton, N.J./North
Hunterdon) went the distance on the mound, allowing four
earned runs on 11 hits and five walks while striking out eight.
In the nightcap, Scranton raced out to an 8-1 lead after three
innings and completed the victory in five innings. Freshman catcher
Jacquelyn Rossi (Eynon, Pa./Valley
View) had a two-run homer in the second inning to break a
1-1 tie. The Royals then took control with five runs in the third,
powered by an RBI double by Williams, a two-run single by winning
pitcher Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock)
and an RBI single by sophomore center fielder Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley
View).
Santarelli finished the second game with three hits, two runs
and an RBI. Hampsey had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and
McHenry, who doubled, Williams and Romano each had two hits, a run
and an RBI.
Hampsey earned her second win of the season by allowing two runs
on four hits and three walks while striking out four in five
innings.
Scranton is back in action on Thursday when it travels to
Jenkintown, Pa. to take on Penn State-Abington at 4 p.m.
