JESSUP, Pa. – Wilkes University scored a pair of runs in
the top of the 10th inning, then held off The University of
Scranton in the bottom half to win the second game of a
doubleheader, 7-6, to complete a sweep in women's softball
action at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex on Tuesday evening.
Wilkes (15-19), which won the opener, 13-4 in six innings,
scored a run in the sixth to tie the game at 5, then scored twice
in the top of the 10th to win it. The Royals (11-14) rallied
with an RBI single from senior first baseman Jamie Shackles (Philadelphia, Pa./Little
Flower), but the tying run was stranded on third to end
the game.
Shackles finished the second game with four hits, including a
double, to go along with two runs and an RBI. Junior right fielder
Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas) hit her sixth homer of the season, a solo shot in
the fifth, and senior third baseman Kristen Williams (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe
Woodbury) had a single, double and a run scored.
In the opener, Wilkes broke a 4-4 tie with nine runs in the top
of the sixth, then stopped the Royals in the bottom of the inning
to win.
Scranton received a solo homer in the fourth inning from
freshman catcher Jacquelyn Rossi (Eynon, Pa./Valley View), who
finished with two hits, and doubles from Williams and sophomore
infielder Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, N.J./West
Milford), who scored twice. Sophomore outfielder
Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley
View) added a pair of singles.
Scranton is back in action on Thursday, April 25, when it hosts
PSU-Abington at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex. The teams will
complete a suspended game from April 4 starting at 6 p.m., followed
by a single game.
