EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball
team managed just six hits and committed four errors while seeing
its seven-game winning streak come to a halt in a 5-2 loss to
Wilkes University at Artillery Park on Thursday afternoon.
The Royals (13-8) lost for the first time in 11 days despite
getting a pair of hits and an RBI from freshmen outfielders
Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) and
Kyle Hamer (Germantown, Md./St. John's College
H.S.).
Wilkes (10-7) jumped ahead with three runs in the third inning
on an infield single, an RBI ground ball and an error. The Colonels
added a run in the fourth on an RBI single to snag a quick 4-0
lead.
Scranton cut the deficit back to three on Dignam's RBI
single in the top of the fourth, but Wilkes answered with a run in
the fifth on a two-out error.
The Royals tried to rally late with Hamer's RBI sac fly in
the eighth inning, but were unable to get any closer.
Sophomore righty Luke
Sheehan (Bel Air, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) was the
tough-luck loser, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits and
four walks while fanning two in six innings. Senior righty
Matt Marinelli (Westbury, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) tossed a pair of scoreless innings to extend his
scoreless innings streak to nine.
Wilkes received a single, double and two RBIs from senior
shortstop Carmen LoPresto (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area).
Scranton returns to action on Thursday when it hosts
Misericordia at 4 p.m. at Connell Park.
