JESSUP, Pa. – Junior right fielder Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas) homered in both ends of the doubleheader, but The
University of Scranton softball team lost a pair of games to
Muhlenberg, 8-4 and 10-7, on Tuesday in the season finale at the
Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
McHenry blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning of the first
game and added a two-run shot in the first inning of the second
game. She has eight home runs and 23 RBIs on the season after
finishing Tuesday a combined 5-for-8 with two doubles, two homers,
four RBIs and three runs scored. McHenry now has 15 career homers
and 67 career RBIs in two seasons.
Muhlenberg (30-7-1) jumped ahead in the first game with five
runs in the second, then added single runs in the fifth, sixth and
seventh innings to hold off the Royals (13-18). Sophomore center
fielder Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley
View) added two hits and a run scored, and senior
infielders Kristen Williams (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe
Woodbury) and Jamie Shackles (Philadelphia, Pa./Little
Flower) and sophomore catcher Blaire Wilkie (Kulpsville, Pa./North Penn)
each had RBIs in the loss.
In the second game, McHenry's blast gave the Royals a 2-1
lead after an inning, but Muhlenberg responded with a run in the
second and three in the third. The Mules pushed the lead to eight
with a run in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Scranton rallied with three in the fifth and two in the sixth,
but couldn't get any closer. Williams scored on an error,
Wilkie had an RBI groundout and freshman designated player
Marie Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North
Pocono) had an RBI single in the fifth. McHenry and
Williams added RBI doubles in the sixth.
Gentile finished the game with two hits and an RBI while
Williams doubled, scored a run and drove in another.
