HUNTINGDON, Pa.—Senior Jamie Shackles (Philadelphia, Pa./Little
Flower) drove in the winning run in the top of the
10th inning to lift The University of Scranton softball team to a
3-2 victory over Juniata College in the first game of a Landmark
Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Royals, however, managed only four hits off Juniata junior
pitcher Kelsea Decker (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) in the nightcap
and dropped a 7-1 decision.
In the first game, Scranton freshman pitcher Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock)
struck out seven and scattered six hits to improve to 3-3 on the
season. She also belted an RBI single in the top of the third
inning during a two-run rally to tie the game.
The Royals also received a double from senior Kristen Williams (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury)
and a single and an RBI from sophomore Blaire Wilkie (Kulpsville, Pa./North Penn) and
a single from freshman Alison Kucharski (Hampton, NJ/North
Hunterdon). Losing pitcher Aly Smith (McVeytown,
Pa./Mount Union) struck out 10 batters for Juniata.
In the nightcap, senior Paige Robertson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area)
had three hits and two RBI and junior Rachel Smith (Martinsburg,
Pa./Home Schooled) and Decker, the winning pitcher, each belted a
home run as the Eagles handed Scranton its first conference loss of
the season. Decker went the distance and struck out five to
improve to 2-2 on the year.
Wilkie finished with two hits and sophomores Gabrielle Santarelli (Jessup, Pa./Valley View)
and Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford)
each singled for the Royals, now 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the
conference.
The Royals will return to action tomorrow afternoon against Hunter
College in a non-conference doubleheader at the Jessup Youth Sports
Complex beginning at 1:00 p.m.
