COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior forward John
Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and senior
midfielder Bill
McGuiness (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) scored
goals as The University of Scranton men's soccer team
defeated Ursinus College, 2-0, on Wednesday evening at Patterson
Field.
The victory was the second straight for Scranton and it marked
the third straight game in which McGuiness found his way into the
scoring column. He also scored in a 1-1 tie against Cabrini on
Saturday, Aug. 31, and scored both of Scranton's goals in a
2-1 victory over St. John Fisher on Saturday, Sept. 7.
Scranton (2-0-2) took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Spadaro
scored on a header just 16 seconds before the break. The goal was
Spadaro's second of the season and sixth of his career.
Sophomore forward Nick
Paganelli (Ossining, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory) picked
up an assist on Spadaro's goal, his second assist of the
season and of his career.
McGuiness converted a corner kick in the 66th
minute to give the Royals an insurance goal following a yellow card
in the penalty area on an Ursinus player. He now has four goals on
the season and 20 for his career. He also has 53 career points (20
goals, 13 assists). He now has eight game-winning goals in his
career.
Freshman goalkeeper Eric
Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) made one
save for the first shutout of his career. The Royals held a 17-7
advantage in shots over the Bears (1-4).
Scranton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 14, when it
travels to Baltimore, Md., to take on Johns Hopkins at 4:30
p.m.
